Meet Phillip Michael Hansen. He is a Black & Tan Coonhound/Labrador mix. He was born in New Mexico on April 26, 2013. He was picked up by a shelter in Cuba, New Mexico (missing part of his rear left leg), and in late June at eight weeks old, he was transferred to the Colorado Puppy Rescue in Denver. That’s where my story begins with Phillip.
I saw his picture on the CPR website as an adoptable dog and knew that I had to meet him. The puppy rescue didn’t have much information on him except that he was found with a missing limb by the shelter in Cuba, NM, but showed all the signs of a happy and healthy puppy. Would it have been nice to know more about his situation? Sure, but it’s typical to receive only a limited amount of information on a rescue dog. Did my husband and I hesitate a little bit because he had 3 legs? Of course, neither one of us had dealt with a pet with a disability before. But with a little research on 3-legged dogs, we realized his life wouldn’t be that much more different from our other dog Mika’s life, and that we could always look into some options to help him out. Ultimately we knew we wanted him to be part of our family and we would help him out any way we could.
